Stanley McCaffrey of the Rotary Club of Stockton, California, USA was President of Rotary International in 1981-82 and his presidential theme was "World Understanding & Peace Through Rotary".
Stanley was born in Taft, California, USA and raised in Whittier. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he was a student body president, earned two varsity letters and graduated with a Phi Beta Kappa honours and a B.A. degree in 1938.
He was a promising young executive with the Standard Oil company in California. Stanley was commissioned an ensigning in the US Naval Reserve before Pearl Harbor and was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action. Following World War II, and a brief period with Kaiser industries he was associated with the University of California for 13 years. First as executive manager of California Alumni Association (1948 -1956), then as vice president of the University 1956 – 1960.
Because of his outstanding performance at the University, he attracted attention of some of California’s top corporate leaders. The resulted in his appointment as President of the San Francisco Bay Area Council (SBAC), an organisation dedicated to keeping the area attractive to business and industry. His success in broadening the horizon of the SBAC was so outstanding that it was with extreme reluctance of the Board, they gave him permission to apply for the covered presidency of the University of the Pacific. A position he held for over 10 years.
Stanley began his 32 years of service To Rotary International in 1948 when you join the Berkeley California club. He served as club president in 1954 - 55 and governor of District 513 in 1964 – 65. In 1968 - 69 stand served as a director of Rotary International. He became the first vice president of Rotary International.
