Clifford Randall was President of Rotary International in 1958 - 59.
His vision for Rotary: Help Shape the Future. That it meet the challenge of new needs in new settings in a changing world.
Clifford Aloysius Randall was born in Cleveland, Ohio USA. When he was a year old his parents move to Milwaukee Wisconsin, where he grew up and attended parochial and college preparatory school. He also attended prep school in Princeton, New Jersey, then entered Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, financing his tuition by playing saxophone with a dance band and graduating with valedictory honours. In 1929, he entered Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee.
After Clifford’s graduation his father-in-law invited Clifford to join his law firm. He also invited Clifford to join the Rotary Club of Milwaukee. Clifford naturally gravitated towards community musical affairs. He headed an organisation, called the Milwaukee Friends of Music and help the development of the Milwaukee Sinfonietta. But he was also active in Community Chest drives, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts, and the Association of Commerce. As president of the Greater Milwaukee Committee for civic planning an urban redevelopment, he was instrumental in the new County Stadium and bringing major league basketball to Milwaukee.
Following his term as district governor in 1950, Clifford rose quickly to international offices, including chairmanship of The Rotary Foundation and finance committee.
In 1974 he urged Rotary to lead in found it founding a world conference of nongovernmental humanitarian organisations. Although the Board did not act on his suggestion at the time, many of his ideas were applied 10 years later to an “Interchange Conference” in Vienna.
